Step by step instructions of how to program your VirusScan
Instructions for McAfee VirusScan version 4.5.1 SP1
VShield (On-access scanner):
Run the "VirusScan Console" program.
Click on "VShield". Then goto the menu bar and select "Task" then "Properties...".
Click on the button marked "Configure".
A box will appear with several tabs at the top.
Under "Detection", every box should be checked except under the section 'what to scan'. Make sure that "program files only" and "compressed files" are checked, and the other two options should be empty.
Under "Action", choose "Prompt user for action" and make sure all boxes have a check mark.
Under "Alert", check "Notify Alert Manager" and "Display custom message."
Under "Report" and "Exclusion", leave the settings as they are.
Click the "OK" button on the bottom of the box.
AutoUpdate (Daily DAT Update):
Run the "VirusScan Console" program.
Click on "AutoUpdate". Then goto the menu bar and select "Task" then "Properties...".
A box will appear with several tabs at the top.
Click first on the tab marked "Schedule", click on "Enable" and "Daily", and choose a time like 7:00 am.
You don't need to configure the settings under "Program" because you will be using the defaults.
Click "OK" at the bottom of the box to return to the console. You should now see a time appearing under "Next time" which should correspond to the time and day that you set.
Make sure you have not confused "Update" with "Upgrade". You want "Update"!!
Scan My Computer (Weekly Scan):
Run the "VirusScan Console" program.
Click on "Scan My Computer". Then goto the menu bar and select "Task" then "Properties...".
A box will appear with several tabs at the top.
Click first on the tab marked "Schedule", click on "Enable" and "Weekly", and choose a time which is an hour later than the time you programmed for the DAT update (above).
Click now on the tab marked "Program".
Select "Normal Scan Mode", "Run minimized", and "Auto Exit".
Click on the button marked "Configure".
A box will appear with several tabs at the top.
Under "Detection", every box under "What to scan" should have a check mark, and make sure you choose "All files".
Under "Action", choose "Move infected files automatically" and allow the default selection of folder.
Under "Alert", check "Notify Alert Manager".
Under "Report" and "Exclusion" and "Security", leave the settings as they are.
Click the "OK" button on the bottom of the box, and then "OK" again.
You should now see a time appearing under "Next time" which should correspond to the time and day that you set.
Alert Manager:
Under the "VirusScan" or "Network Associates" group in your Start Menu, run the "VirusScan Alerting Configuration" program.
Select "Enable Alert Manager alerting".
Click on the button marked "Configure".
Under "Destination for alerts", click on "Browse".
Choose your computer from the network list (it must be a computer that you have permissions to).
Click "OK" and then "OK" again to exit the program.
Instructions for McAfee VirusScan version 4.0.3a (YOU NEED TO UPDATE TO 4.50!)
Weekly DAT Update:
Run the "VirusScan Console" program.
Click on "Automatic DAT Update". Then goto the menu bar and select "Scan" then "Properties...".
In the box which appears, make sure that the option "FTP from a remote network" is selected and that the FTP computer is "ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/datfiles/4.x". If you do not see this click on the button marked "Default".
Click on the button marked "Schedule". Select "Enable scheduler", choose "Weekly", and under "Start at" choose a time and day where you are least likely to be at your computer, for example 5:00 AM on Sunday.
Click "OK" and "OK" to return to the console. You should now see "Weekly" with the time you selected appearing beside this item in the console.
Make sure you have not confused "Update" with "Upgrade". You want "Update"!!
Weekly Scan:
From the "VirusScan Console" program, goto the menu bar and select "Scan" then "New Task". Give the task the name "Scan My Computer".
A box will appear marked "Task Properties". You should see "All local drives" under "item name". Under "what to scan" make sure "Compressed files", "Include subfolders", and "All files" are selected with a dot or checkmark.
Click on the tab at the top marked "Actions" and select "Clean infected file".
Click on the tab at the top marked "Reports" and select "Log to file" with the destination chosen for you, and "Limit size" to 100kb.
Click on the tab at the top marked "Schedule" and select Select "Enable scheduler", choose "Weekly", and under "Start at" choose the same day that you chose for the DAT update and a time which is 1h later.
All other settings are the default. Click "OK" to return to the console. You should now see "Weekly" with the time you selected appearing beside this item in the console.
On-Access Monitor Configuration:
Run the "VirusScan Console" program.
Click on "VirusScan On-Access Monitor". Then goto the menu bar and select "Scan" then "Properties...".
Select for "Scan": inbound, outbound, and floppy.
Select for "What to scan": program files and compressed files.
Select for "General": checkmark beside first and third options.
Under the tabs at the top marked "Actions" and "Reports", configure the same as you did above for "Weekly Scan".
All other settings are the default. Click "OK" to return to the console. You should now see "Enabled" appearing beside this item in the console.
